Setting up a CNAME record for each of the domain names or subdomains you have in the hosting account will allow you to point it to a different domain/subdomain. The forwarded domain will lose all its records - A, MX etc, and will take the records of the domain name it is being forwarded to. In this light, you simply can't create a CNAME record to redirect your domain name to a third-party company and retain a working e-mail service with the first provider. Also, it is important to note that a CNAME record is always a string of words and not a number as it is generally mistaken for the A record of the Internet domain being redirected. One of the major uses of a CNAME record is to direct a domain which you own through one provider to the servers of some other company if you have set up a site with the latter. This way, the site will appear under your own domain address, not under some subdomain provided by the third-party provider.

CNAME Records in Shared Hosting

In case you have a shared hosting plan through our company and you wish to create a CNAME record, it'll take you just a few mouse clicks to make it happen. You can access the DNS records for all domain addresses and subdomains hosted in your account via the Hepsia CP that comes with each plan and adding a new record is as simple as clicking on a button, picking out the type, which is CNAME in this case, entering the actual record value and saving the modification. If you have never added this sort of record before, you will find a Help section with a detailed video tutorial which you can watch, or you can simply contact us and we will help you with this task. If you have built a website using another company, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you want to designate a subdomain to be used with the services of a different company, like Google Apps, all it takes is setting up a CNAME record with a couple of clicks inside your CP.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server with our company and you want to set up a CNAME record, it takes just a few mouse clicks to complete this task. The plans are managed via our in-house built Hepsia hosting Control Panel where you will see a section committed to the DNS records of the domains and subdomains hosted inside the account. To set up a CNAME record, you will simply have to choose the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), enter where the latter is going to be redirected to and save the change. The new record will be active almost right away in our system and will propagate worldwide within several hours. Modifying or deleting an existing CNAME record inside the account is just as easy and takes a click. If you experience any difficulties, you can go through our comprehensive help article, watch the short video on the topic that we have added in the Control Panel, or simply contact us for help.
