Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the sole TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken 3rd-level domain names remained online.
